A compact is a hinge, a base and a lid, sized around a pan and its fill weight. Most of the difficulty lives in the hinge and in how the pack behaves once it is filled and cartoned.
Sizing around the pan
The internal cavity is set by the pan and the fill weight, not by the outside dimensions. Give the pan size and the fill weight, and the outer dimensions follow — the reverse usually produces a case that looks right and does not close properly.
One-piece or two-piece
A one-piece case with a living hinge costs less to assemble and leaves fewer components to hold on the filling line. A two-piece case with a pin hinge generally gives a firmer feel and a wider choice of materials for the two halves. The trade-off is assembly time against perceived quality.
Closure and transit
A compact that opens in a shipping carton is a returns problem. If the pack travels without a secondary box, that has to be stated up front — it changes the closure design more than any other single requirement.
Decoration on compacts
The lid is the largest flat decorated surface in most colour cosmetics packs, so this category takes hot foil stamping, silk screen printing, UV and matte lacquering and soft touch finishes well. Which of those apply is confirmed per project against the specific moulding.
