Cosmetic Packaging MOQ Explained: Stock vs Custom
MOQ (minimum order quantity) is the first barrier every early-stage brand hits, and the single most useful rule is this: catalogue items whose tooling already exists carry no tooling cost at all, while custom-molded parts carry a one-time tool investment that has to be recovered across the run. Confusing the two is how buyers either pay too much or get locked into volumes they can't sell. Here's what MOQ really means and how to plan around it.
What MOQ Actually Means
An MOQ is the smallest batch a supplier will produce economically. For catalogue items — products whose tooling already exists and is paid for — the marginal cost per piece is low, so the barrier to a small first order is low. For custom molding, the supplier must recover tooling, setup, and machine time, which is why custom minimums sit higher. The mistake most buyers make is comparing stock MOQs and custom MOQs as if they were the same number.
Real Order Sizes We've Run
To see how MOQ scales, look at what a mature order actually looks like. One of our archived airless-bottle orders — two capacities, 30ml and 50ml — ran 125,100 pieces and passed final inspection on a 500-piece sample pulled from 6 cartons. Your launch might start at the MOQ, but a product that sells grows past it quickly; choose a supplier whose inspection and quality systems hold up at both sizes.
| Year | Order | Quantity | Verdict | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2007 | 30ml / 50ml Airless Bottles | 125,100 pcs | PASSED | Sample 500 pcs from 6 cartons |
