Choosing a treatment pump

A treatment pump is a dosing system: actuator, stem, spring, gasket and dip tube. The pack is judged on dose repeatability and on whether it survives being stored on its side.

Dose per stroke

The dose is set by the pump chamber, and it has to match how the product is meant to be used — a serum dosed at 0.5 ml behaves very differently from one dosed at 0.2 ml. State the target dose in millilitres, not as "a small amount".

Formulation compatibility

Pumps contain a metal spring by default, which is a problem for anything acidic or water-based with reactive actives. Where that applies, the spring and the gasket materials need to be specified early — it is not a change that can be made after tooling.

Airless or standard

Standard pumps draw air back into the bottle, so the formula is exposed to oxygen over its life and the dose falls off as the bottle empties. Airless systems avoid both, at a higher unit cost and with less tolerance for a viscous formula. Decide which of those two problems actually matters for the product.

Leak behaviour

A pump stored on its side, or shipped by air, will be tested by pressure changes. Whether the pack needs a locking clip or a secondary seal is a decision to make with the shipping method in front of you, not after the first container is loaded.
