Cosmetic Tubes: Structure, Cap and Printing, Decoded
Cosmetic Tubes: Structure, Cap and Printing, Decoded
A tube looks like one object, but it is three decisions stacked: the tube wall (how the formula is protected), the shoulder and cap (how it opens and doses), and the printing (how the brand actually looks). Most tube "sourcing problems" are really a mismatch in one of these three layers. Here is how to judge each on the product itself.
1. The tube wall: mono-layer or barrier
- Mono-layer PE/PP tubes — one extruded plastic layer. Light, squeezable, lowest cost, and the easiest to recycle (mono-material). Perfect for body lotions, gels, shampoos that do not need heavy protection.
- Laminated tubes (ABL, PBL, EVOH) — a plastic/aluminium or EVOH barrier layer protects the formula from oxygen, light, and moisture migration. Needed for retinol, vitamin C, and fragrance-heavy products. Trade-off: lamination makes recycling harder.
- Aluminium (metal) tubes — maximum barrier for professional or clinical formulas; premium but heavier and pricier.
- Ask specifically: is PCR available in the wall, and does PCR change the barrier? Recycled content can alter oxygen permeability — it must be tested with your formula.
2. The shoulder, cap and opening
- Flip-top / snap caps for one-handed daily use (lotions, creams).
- Disc-top (turntable) caps for precise, cleaner dispensing — popular on premium skincare.
- SC (screw cap) and standard closures where simple opening matters; some tubes take pumps or airless systems on the shoulder for dose control.
- Small but critical: cap torque and the tube's shoulder-to-body weld strength — a tube that splits at the weld fails the whole pack.
3. Printing and decoration that survive use
Offset and silk-screen printing, hot stamping, and labels each suit different art. The tests that matter are print adhesion and scratch resistance — a tube is squeezed, carried, and rubbed, so decoration must flex with it. On any pre-production sample, check print rub-off after the tube is squeezed repeatedly.
Match the tube to the formula
| Formula & use | Suggested wall | Suggested cap |
|---|---|---|
| Body lotion / wash, cost-sensitive | Mono-layer PE/PCR | Flip-top or disc-top |
| Retinol / vitamin C / fragrance | Barrier laminate (EVOH / aluminium) | Disc-top or airless-style |
| Clinical / professional actives | Aluminium | Sealed screw or crimped |
| Sustainability-led everyday line | Mono-material + PCR | Simple, mono-material cap |
Verification before mass production
Order a decorated pre-production sample and test: weld/seal integrity, cap torque, print adhesion, dimensional tolerance (to 0.02 mm), and barrier performance with your actual formula. At COSMPACK every tube order is inspected to ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 across During Production, Final, and Pre-Shipment stages, and the real report is provided — not promised. Browse tube options or request a quote; MOQ, samples, and lead time are confirmed per project.
