Lotion Pumps, Fine Mist and Droppers: Dosing Devices Explained
The closure is where a product is loved or abandoned. A pump that sputters, sprays the wrong amount, or leaks after a month makes a great formula feel cheap. Pumps, sprayers, and droppers are not accessories — they are precision mechanisms. Here is how to judge the device itself before you commit.
The four dispensing families
- Lotion pumps — high, repeatable output (commonly around 0.5–2 cc per stroke) for creams and lotions. Look for a smooth, even stroke and full evacuation.
- Fine-mist sprayers — atomize liquid into a fine mist for toners, mists, hair products. The atomization quality (droplet size, spray pattern) is the whole product — judge it by spraying, not by reading.
- Droppers — precise single drops for serums, oils, and actives. Glass pipette with rubber/plastic bulb, or all-plastic assemblies; check the drop you actually get.
- Airless systems — no dip tube, piston-fed, best for oxygen-sensitive formulas (covered in our separate guide to airless pump bottles).
What actually decides performance
- Output per stroke (cc). Specify the dose your customers should get. It is determined by the pump's chamber and spring, not by the bottle size — tell the supplier your target dose.
- Neck fit: screw vs crimp. Screw closures are refillable and simpler; crimped (non-screw) closures are lower-profile and common on premium mist. The neck finish must match your bottle exactly.
- Formula compatibility. Viscosity, oils, alcohol, and fragrance interact with the pump's gaskets, ball, and dip tube. A pump chosen "by looks" fails on real formula — test with your actual product, including at temperature.
- Priming. How many strokes before the first full dose? Good pumps prime in one or two; frustrating ones need many.
- PCR & mono-material. Pumps are multi-material by nature. If sustainability targets matter, ask what recycled content is possible in the components and what documentation is provided.

Closures fail quietly, so test hard on the pre-production sample: output volume per stroke against spec; actuation life (thousands of cycles without leaking or seizing); leak and seal (inverted and pressure); cap torque and thread fit; and dimensional tolerance to 0.02 mm.
